Some places you visit. Others stay with you. Abu Dhabi, for me, is the latter.
I lived there for several years, and what I came to understand about the city is that it doesn’t try to overwhelm you — it simply works. It is clean, calm, and built with a level of intention that shows up as much in the smallest details as in its most iconic landmarks. And at the center of that intention sits Yas Island, the reason I first moved to Abu Dhabi and the place that still pulls me back.

If Dubai is spectacle, Abu Dhabi is balance. Yas Island is where that balance becomes entertainment.

A Desert Turned Leisure District
What was once a stretch of open desert is now one of the most complete leisure destinations I’ve experienced anywhere — not as a marketing claim, but in daily practice. Theme parks, beaches, hotels, golf, shopping, dining, and motorsport all sit within minutes of one another.

Ferrari World Abu Dhabi delivers pure adrenaline. Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi brings cinematic characters to life across immersive lands. Yas Waterworld offers a full day of slides and family fun, while SeaWorld Abu Dhabi adds marine-life encounters, aquariums, and conservation programming under one roof. And Yas Marina Circuit, home to Formula 1’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, gives the island its global sporting prestige. What struck me most while living there wasn’t any single attraction — it was how little friction connects them. No long transfers, no complicated logistics, just seamless movement from one experience to the next.

Golf Above the Arabian Gulf
Yas Island isn’t only built for thrill-seekers. Yas Links Abu Dhabi, the championship links-style course that hosts the DP World Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, recently entered the Top100GolfCourses.com World Top 100 — debuting at No. 96 and standing as the only course in the UAE to make that list. It has held the No. 1 ranking in the Middle East for over a decade.

I still miss that course, and those ocean views. Even non-golfers often stop by simply for the scenery, where rolling fairways meet the waters of the Arabian Gulf in a way few courses anywhere can claim.

Abu Dhabi never asks you to choose between culture and entertainment. It simply gives you both.

For many travelers, the smartest way to experience the city isn’t as a destination at all — it’s as a stopover. Etihad Airways has built Abu Dhabi into one of the more convenient connecting hubs in global travel, and a few days layered into a route to the Maldives, Thailand, Sri Lanka, or India suddenly feel less like a delay and more like the beginning of the trip.

What’s Next for Yas Island
The island is still evolving, and quickly. Disney and Miral have announced a landmark theme park resort for Yas Island — the seventh Disney theme park destination globally, and the first in the Middle East. Sphere Abu Dhabi, the first Sphere venue outside the United States, is now under construction on a site between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, with completion targeted for the end of 2029.

And yet here’s the part I find most interesting: Yas Island doesn’t feel like a place waiting for its future. It already feels complete. What stands out, even after living there, isn’t what has been built — it’s how well everything already works together. That’s rare in global travel. Abu Dhabi and Yas Island offer something many destinations aspire to and few truly deliver: excitement without chaos, luxury without friction, entertainment without stress. You don’t just visit. You settle into it. And when it’s time to leave, it rarely feels like a trip checked off a list — it feels like a place you’ve come to understand, and one you’ll find yourself wanting to return to.
