This is the quiet revolution reshaping long-haul travel: the stopover as destination. A growing number of the world’s major carriers have stopped treating the hub city as a necessary inconvenience and started presenting it as a second vacation — often at little or no additional cost. For the discerning traveler who already flies internationally several times a year, understanding these programs is not a trick. It is table stakes.
Here are the seven programs that matter most for travelers departing North America — each built around a city worth your time.

Istanbul — Turkish Airlines
The program that set the benchmark. Turkish Airlines offers eligible passengers with layovers of 20 hours or more a complimentary hotel stay in Istanbul: one night in a four-star property for Economy passengers, up to three nights in a five-star or boutique hotel for Business Class travelers departing from the United States. For shorter connections of six to twenty-four hours, the airline’s Touristanbul program provides free guided city tours covering the Historical Peninsula, the Bosphorus, Hagia Sophia, and the Topkapi Palace — all at no cost, no strings attached.

Istanbul earns its reputation. It is one of the few cities on earth where a single afternoon can cover two millennia of continuous history. The Grand Bazaar, the Egyptian Spice Market, the sweeping views from the Galata Tower — these are not tourist obligations. They are the reason twenty hours feels insufficient. The program requires a request at least 72 hours before departure; airport-to-hotel transfers are not included. Book accordingly.

Lisbon & Porto — TAP Air Portugal
Eight consecutive years as Global Traveler’s best stopover program in the world is not a coincidence. TAP Air Portugal has built something genuinely different: a free stopover of up to ten days in Lisbon or Porto, with no additional airfare charge on either the outbound or return leg. More than 193,000 passengers added the program to their itineraries in the first half of 2025 alone — a 74 percent increase over the prior year.

Madrid — Iberia Hola Madrid
Iberia’s Hola Madrid program turns the Spanish capital into a destination in its own right for passengers connecting to any point in the airline’s network. The stopover — available on the outbound or return leg — can extend up to nine nights in Madrid at no additional airfare cost. Included benefits: a complimentary two-day public transport card valid across the Metro and municipal buses; a 25 percent discount on intra-Spain and Portugal flights with Iberia and Iberia Express; and curated discount agreements with hotels, museums, restaurants, and entertainment venues across the city.

Madrid rewards the stopover in ways that shorter visits cannot. The Prado alone merits two full days. The city’s culinary scene — from the historic tabernas of La Latina to the Michelin-starred dining of the Salamanca neighborhood — requires time to navigate properly. Hola Madrid is available to passengers on long-haul Iberia flights; on routes from or to the United States and México, American Airlines and British Airways codeshares also qualify. For the North American traveler heading anywhere in Europe, the program represents an easy upgrade on what is often an obligatory connection.

Doha — Qatar Airways
Qatar Airways operates the most deliberately luxury-positioned stopover program in the world. Through its Discover Qatar platform, passengers with transits of twelve to ninety-six hours in Doha can book hotel packages starting at USD $14 per person per night — a government-subsidized rate that bears no relationship to the actual market cost of a five-star room in the Qatari capital. The program runs in four tiers: Standard (four-star properties including IHG, Hilton, and Marriott brands), Premium (five-star), Premium Beach (five-star with access to Doha Sands Beach Club), and Luxury (five-star-plus). All Avios and Qpoints accumulate on the full package.

Doha is a city that rewards curiosity. The Museum of Islamic Art is among the finest in the world. Souq Waqif remains an authentic, functioning market in the old city. The desert dune experiences outside the capital — available through Discover Qatar’s excursion program — are unlike anything else in the region. A two- to three-night stay is enough to understand why Qatar invested so deliberately in making this connection worth extending.

Dubai — Emirates Dubai Connect
Emirates’ Dubai Connect program stands apart from every other on this list for one reason: it is completely free, including hotel accommodation, airport transfers, and meals. Passengers with connecting times of eight to twenty-six hours (six hours for Business and First Class) on eligible Emirates itineraries receive complimentary four- or five-star hotel accommodation, round-trip airport transfers, and meals during their stay. For itineraries that require a UAE entry visa, Emirates assists with that as well.
The important distinction: Dubai Connect is designed for passengers whose schedule produces a long layover naturally — it does not apply to voluntarily extended connections. Both flights must be on a single Emirates ticket, and there must be no earlier connection available. For those who qualify, it is one of the most generous transit programs in commercial aviation. Dubai itself needs little introduction: the city’s hospitality infrastructure, shopping, and dining scene are among the most developed in the world for the short-stay traveler.

Abu Dhabi — Etihad Airways
Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Stopover program offers up to two complimentary hotel nights at partner properties — including the Shangri-La and Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi — for passengers from the United States, Canada, Europe, or Australia traveling round-trip through Abu Dhabi. The program includes 24-hour check-in flexibility, a complimentary Stopover Pass with a 10GB local SIM card, tourist shuttle access, and up to 15 percent off attractions including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan (the presidential palace, open to visitors), Ferrari World, and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi is the city most international travelers fly past on the way to Dubai — and that is precisely its advantage. Quieter, less photographed, and in 2025 and 2026 the site of some of the most significant cultural openings in the region: the Zayed National Museum (December 2025), TeamLab Phenomena (the largest immersive art space in the world, April 2025), and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi (expected 2026). Saadiyat Island alone justifies the stop.

Panama City — Copa Airlines
For travelers departing Los Cabos, Mexico City, or anywhere in the Copa network toward South America, the Panama Stopover is the most relevant program in this guide. Copa Airlines, operating through its Hub of the Americas at Tocumen International, allows passengers to extend their connection in Panama City for up to fifteen days at no additional airfare cost. In 2025, more than 200,000 passengers used the program — a 25 percent increase over 2024, and a record since the program’s launch in 2019.

Panama City surprises most visitors. The historic Casco Viejo — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is one of the finest colonial neighborhoods in the Americas, recently restored and now home to boutique hotels, restaurants, and rooftop bars overlooking the Pacific entrance to the canal. The canal itself, viewable at the Miraflores Locks visitor center, is one of the great engineering spectacles of the twentieth century. For the traveler connecting from Baja California through Panama toward Colombia, Peru, or beyond, the program transforms what was a transit obligation into a logical two-destination itinerary.
