The morning sun casts long shadows across emerald fairways as the Pacific Ocean crashes against rugged cliffs below. A red-tailed hawk circles overhead while golfers line up their approach shots, the Sea of Cortés shimmering in the distance. This is golf in Baja California –where world-class courses meet dramatic landscapes and every round becomes an unforgettable experience.
The Baja California Peninsula has emerged as one of México’s premier golf destinations, drawing enthusiasts from around the globe who seek more than just a good game. They come for the stunning ocean vistas, the year-round sunshine, and courses designed by legends that challenge players while showcasing the raw beauty of this extraordinary land.
Los Cabos: Where Desert Meets Sea
The Los Cabos corridor anchors the peninsula’s golf scene with an impressive collection of championship courses. Here, designers have transformed desert terrain into lush paradises that seamlessly blend with the natural environment.
Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course stands as a testament to what happens when vision meets nature. Designer Jack Nicklaus took advantage of the dramatic coastline, creating holes that play along cliff edges with the Pacific as a backdrop. The signature 17th hole, perched on a peninsula jutting into the sea, demands both courage and precision. Golfers must navigate ocean breezes while marveling at migrating whales during winter months.
Not far away, Quivira Golf Club offers another spectacular seaside experience. Designed by Nicklaus, this newer course features the highest oceanfront elevation change in Los Cabos, with six holes running along rugged granite cliffs. The views are breathtaking, but the course demands full attention—water hazards, strategic bunkers, and elevation changes test every aspect of a player’s game.
The One&Only Palmilla Golf Club brings history and tradition to the region. Originally designed by Jack Nicklaus in 1992 and later updated, this course offers a more forgiving experience while maintaining championship standards. The Mountain and Arroyo nines wind through desert landscape with views of the Sea of Cortés, while the Ocean nine delivers dramatic coastal holes that rank among the most photographed in Baja.
Our very own golf editor, Greg Norman designed a 19-hole championship course renowned for its links-style design, featuring vast sand dunes, arroyos and panoramic ocean views from nearly every hole – Solmar Golf Links in Cabo San Lucas.
Loreto: Hidden Gem of the East Cape
Further north, the TPC Danzante Bay at Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa offers a different kind of magic. Designed by Rees Jones, this course sits on the east coast of the peninsula where the Sea of Cortés creates a stunning turquoise canvas. The layout takes advantage of desert arroyos and natural rock formations, with holes playing through canyons and along ridges. Five holes run directly along the water, offering views of Danzante Island and the surrounding mountains. It’s a course that feels remote and wild, yet provides all the amenities of a world-class facility.
La Paz: Coastal Elegance
El Cortés Golf Club brings championship golf to La Paz with a Gary Player signature design. This course offers a more intimate experience, with strategic water features and desert vegetation framing each hole. The layout rewards thoughtful play over raw power, making it enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels. The clubhouse, with its contemporary Mexican architecture, provides panoramic views of the course and marina below.
Ensenada and Rosarito: Northern Treasures
Moving up the peninsula, the Baja Country Club and the Bajamar Golf Course in Ensenada, the Real del Mar Golf Resort on the corridor in Tijuana offer excellent courses with cooler coastal climates. The Tijuana Country Club is a favorite option for locals and visitors. These northern venues provide a different atmosphere – less desert, more Mediterranean – while maintaining the high standards Baja golfers expect.
Beyond the Fairways
What makes golf in Baja California truly special extends beyond the courses themselves. The experience includes post-round celebrations at clubhouses serving fresh local seafood and regional wines from nearby Guadalupe Valley. Many resorts offer spa treatments designed to soothe golf-weary muscles, while personal concierges arrange sunset cruises and culinary adventures.
The weather cooperates year-round, with over 300 days of sunshine annually. Winter months bring pleasant temperatures in the 70s and 80s, while summer offers early morning and late afternoon tee times to beat the heat. The shoulder seasons of spring and fall provide ideal conditions and better rates.
Golf in Baja California isn’t just about lowering your handicap or collecting course pins. It’s about standing on a tee box with the Pacific stretching to infinity, feeling the desert breeze, and knowing you’re playing in one of the world’s most spectacular settings. It’s where challenging golf meets natural wonder, creating memories that last long after the final putt drops.
Whether you’re a scratch golfer seeking championship challenges or a casual player who appreciates stunning scenery with your bogeys, Baja California’s courses deliver an experience that transcends the game itself. This is golf as it was meant to be played – in harmony with nature, surrounded by beauty, and filled with moments that remind you why you fell in love with the sport in the first place.
