On December 4, 2025, Copa Airlines inaugurated a groundbreaking direct flight between Los Cabos International Airport and Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport, marking the first-ever nonstop connection between Los Cabos and Central America. This strategic route represents a transformative milestone for the Baja California Sur destination, eliminating the need for lengthy layovers in México City or U.S. airports and directly linking Los Cabos with over 85 destinations across 32 countries throughout Latin America, the Caribbean, and beyond.

The new service operates three times weekly on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays aboard a Boeing 737-800 aircraft with capacity for 160 passengers. Flight CM801 departs Panama’s Tocumen International Airport at 9:09 a.m. local time, arriving at Los Cabos at 12:27 p.m. The return flight, CM802, leaves Los Cabos at 1:33 p.m., landing back in Panama at 8:30 p.m. local time. The carefully designed schedule facilitates seamless connections throughout Copa’s extensive network, allowing travelers to reach their final destinations with minimal wait times.

Copa Airlines has maintained a presence in México for over 30 years, and in 2026 will mark 35 years of operations to and from México City, according to Mauro Arredondo, Copa Airlines’ general manager in México. Los Cabos now becomes the airline’s fifth Mexican destination, joining México City, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Cancún in its network. The expansion reflects Copa’s confidence in Los Cabos’ growing appeal as a luxury tourism destination and its strategic importance in connecting Mexican travelers with Latin America and the Caribbean.

The route’s development culminated from more than nine years of collaboration between Copa Airlines and the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (Fiturca). Rodrigo Esponda, General Director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust, emphasized that for the first time, Los Cabos is directly opening its doors to the Latin American market, which will be key to continuing to increase tourist arrivals from the region. The partnership represents a significant diversification strategy, reducing Los Cabos’ traditional dependence on North American markets by tapping into the high-spending, long-stay visitor segments from South America.

The economic impact is projected to be substantial. The route is expected to bring more than 25,000 tourists annually to Los Cabos from Central and South America, with particularly strong interest from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Peru—markets known for premium travel preferences and extended vacation stays. Fernando Ojeda, the Baja California Sur deputy secretary of tourism, expressed enthusiasm about the route’s launch, noting its alignment with the state’s goals to diversify tourism markets and strengthen local economic development.

What makes this connection truly transformative is Copa’s position as the operator of the Hub of the Americas at Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport. This strategic hub serves as Latin America’s premier connectivity center, offering more than 395 daily flights to over 85 cities across the Americas. Through this single connection point, Los Cabos gains access to destinations throughout Central and South America that were previously difficult or impossible to reach directly, including Costa Rica, Guatemala, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and numerous Caribbean nations including the Dominican Republic and Barbados.

Copa Airlines’ network expansion also benefits from its Panama Stopover program, allowing passengers to stay in Panama City for up to seven days at no additional airfare when connecting through the hub. This innovative program positions the airline’s connectivity strategy as not merely functional but experiential, encouraging travelers to explore Panama while en route to their final destination. The program enhances the appeal of routing through Panama rather than traditional connection points like Mexico City or U.S. gateway cities.

Pedro Heilbron, CEO of Copa Airlines, characterized the Los Cabos route as part of the airline’s broader network expansion strategy aimed at strengthening continental connectivity. The airline has simultaneously been reviving and launching other strategic routes, including service to Salvador da Bahia in Brazil beginning January 7, 2026, and Santiago de los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic starting January 15, 2026. These additions complement the Los Cabos service, creating a more robust Latin American network that benefits travelers throughout the region.

The inaugural flight received an enthusiastic welcome from Los Cabos officials, with representatives from the Baja California Sur Ministry of Tourism, Economy and Sustainability (SETUE), the Embassy of Panama in México, Fiturca, the San José del Cabo Airport, and the Los Cabos Hotel Association participating in the celebratory ceremony. The event underscored the collaborative spirit that made the route possible and the shared commitment to growing tourism ties between México and Panama.

For Los Cabos—a destination celebrated for its dramatic convergence of desert landscapes and azure Pacific waters, world-class resorts, championship golf courses, and vibrant culinary scene—this new connectivity represents more than just additional flights. It positions the destination as a truly international gateway, accessible not only to North American travelers but now seamlessly connected to the entire Latin American continent. As Los Cabos continues its trajectory of sustained growth, welcoming 3.9 million visitors in 2024, the Copa Airlines connection arrives at a pivotal moment, offering the destination unprecedented access to emerging markets and reinforcing its status as one of Mexico’s most dynamic and globally connected tourism destinations.

The route also represents a significant competitive advantage over other Mexican Pacific destinations. While Puerto Vallarta previously enjoyed Copa service before the pandemic, that route remains suspended with no confirmed plans for reinstatement. Los Cabos’ success in securing this connection demonstrates its proactive approach to building international partnerships and its appeal to carriers seeking reliable, high-value markets. As the destination continues investing in luxury accommodations, infrastructure improvements, and air connectivity, the Panama route stands as testament to Los Cabos’ evolution into a truly world-class destination bridging North America, Central America, and South America through the power of strategic air connectivity.
