A Car Written in Moonlight

The Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ is not a vehicle. It is a literary commission rendered in copper, silver, and the last great W16 ever built.

There is a moment, when the air brake of this particular Bugatti deploys at speed, when the car reveals a secret. Hidden beneath the rear wing is a hand-painted scene — a reinterpretation of the most famous tableau in French literature: the Little Prince and the fox. For anyone who has read Saint-Exupéry’s novella, the image lands with the full force of memory. For the man who commissioned this car, it lands as something more intimate still. He is the author of the sequel.

The W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ — The Return of the Young Prince — is a one-of-one creation produced through Bugatti’s Sur Mesure program, the marque’s atelier for absolute personalization. It began, as all great collaborations do, with a conversation. In October 2023, in Molsheim, the collector sat with Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, and described the world of his own book: a young prince returning not from an asteroid, but from the moon. From that session, a car was born.

The Object Itself
Before considering what this Mistral means, it helps to understand what it is. The W16 Mistral is the last road-going Bugatti to carry the quad-turbocharged, 8.0-liter W16 engine — a powertrain that debuted in the 2005 Veyron and spent twenty years redefining what a production car could be. With 1,578 horsepower, a top speed of 420 km/h, and a base price of five million euros before taxes, the Mistral was always destined to be significant. Only 99 were produced, and every one was spoken for before the first was shown to the public.

‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ is one of those 99 — transformed, through months of design work, into something far beyond any standard specification. This is the edition that Bugatti’s Sur Mesure team turned into a canvas.

A Palette Drawn from the Moon
The exterior colorway was created specifically for this commission. Copper and bronze hues — earthy, warm, and intensely metallic — were chosen to evoke the quality of moonlight falling on desert terrain. The finish responds dramatically to changes in light, a deliberate choice given the Mistral’s sculptural surface language. On a static car in a gallery, it glows. At speed on a coastal road at dusk, one imagines it transforms entirely.

The detail work is extraordinary in its patience. Along the rear flanks and across the surface of the upper wing, Bugatti’s specialists applied a constellation of silver stars by hand — a process of layering and refinement that required, by the brand’s own account, considerable time and dedication. The horseshoe grille retains its iconic architecture, but its internal lines were redesigned to follow the dynamic upward flow of the hood, creating visual continuity from nose to sky. Gold trim on the Bugatti Macaron, copper brake calipers, and matching ‘EB’ emblems at each wheel center complete an exterior that functions as both automobile and illuminated manuscript.

Inside the Story
The cabin continues the literary logic without repetition. Two leather tones — Terre d’Or, luminous and warm; Driftwood, darker and more grounding — create a visual dialogue that echoes the relationship between moon and earth running through the collector’s book. On the Terre d’Or door panels, the moon is embroidered in leather. Around it, star motifs are stitched into the surface. The center console carries star-inspired inlays in brown-carbon weave.

The most significant interior detail is, by necessity, the smallest. Inside the gear shifter, encased like a piece of fine jewelry, sits a miniature silver rose — a 3D scan taken from a real flower and then sculpted into precise miniature form. In Saint-Exupéry’s original story, the rose is the emblem of something irreplaceable and almost impossible to articulate. In this car, it sits where the driver’s hand rests every time they change gear. The symbolism is not accidental.

The Sur Mesure Standard
What Bugatti has accomplished with the Sur Mesure program — and what this car demonstrates most clearly — is the elevation of personalization from specification exercise to genuine authorship. The collector did not simply choose a color or request a monogram. He brought a narrative universe: a book, a moon, a returning prince, a philosophy of tenderness and remembrance. Bugatti’s design team translated that universe into a coherent visual language across every surface of the car, without a single element that feels arbitrary or decorative for its own sake.

For the luxury traveler who measures experiences not by price but by irreplaceability, this Mistral presents a useful lens. Personalization at the highest level — whether in a bespoke hotel suite, a private charter, or a one-of-one automobile — is not about exclusivity for its own sake. It is about the compression of meaning: the capacity of a made object to hold a story, a memory, a relationship, and return it to you every time you encounter it. The W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ does exactly that. It is a car you read.

✶ BAJATRAVELER® TAKEAWAY
The Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘Le Retour du Jeune Prince’ is one of the most complete examples of luxury personalization produced in the current era — not because of its price, but because of its depth of intention. Every detail, from the hand-applied stars to the sculpted silver rose in the gear shifter, exists in service of a single coherent story. For collectors and connoisseurs who understand that the rarest luxury is meaning, this one-of-one commission sets a standard that very few objects in the world can approach.

Bugatti Sur Mesure Program
The W16 Mistral is produced in a total run of 99 units — all sold. The Sur Mesure program accepts commissions on current and future Bugatti models.
