On the 18th fairway at Pebble Beach, where the Pacific claims its share of every view, automotive history collects itself once a year into a single, curated afternoon. This August, that history gained a new chapter. Bugatti’s Destrier — a one-of-one hypercar built for a single collector — made its public debut during Monterey Car Week 2026, arriving first in a private unveiling at the Maison BUGATTI, then coursing the coastal roads toward Big Sur before taking its place on the Concept Lawn at The Quail. It is the third creation of Bugatti’s Programme Solitaire, and among the most quietly radical.

Heritage Carved in Carbon
Bugatti has been building one-off automobiles since 1909, but Programme Solitaire, launched in 2025, formalized that instinct into a dedicated coachbuilding division capped at two commissions a year. The Destrier follows the Brouillard and the F.K.P. Hommage — both cars built around specific stories from Bugatti’s past. The Destrier breaks that pattern: an emotional, design-first sculpture rather than a tribute. Yet its lineage remains unmistakably Bugatti. The marque’s Type 57 chassis once underpinned the Le Mans-winning 57G and 57C “Tank” racers, as well as the Type 57SC Atlantic, widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever built. An oil filler cap bearing the Destrier emblem and its “1/1” designation marks this as the latest entry in that lineage — a car conceived, in Bugatti’s words, to be passed from generation to generation. The timing is fitting: 2026 also marks the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, an institution built on the same premise — that certain machines are built to outlive their moment.

From Bolide to Sculpture
Underneath its new bodywork, the Destrier is pure Bolide — the carbon-fiber monocoque and the 1,600-metric-horsepower quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 from Bugatti’s most extreme track machine. What changes is everything the eye takes in. Bugatti Director of Design Frank Heyl and his team stripped away the Bolide’s aggressive aerodynamic addenda, lowering the car to just 39.4 inches — the lowest Bugatti ever built — and replacing violence with proportion. Parametric patterns thread through the head and tail lamps, a modern signature layered onto a shape that reads as sculpture first, hypercar second. Named for the destrier, the powerful warhorse ridden by medieval knights, the car inverts the usual hypercar logic: rather than performance dressed up as art, it is art that happens to conceal 1,600 PS beneath the skin.

Monterey Car Week: The Collector’s Calendar
